1) What is the difference between UHF and VHF? Which is better for me?

UHF (Ultra High Frequency) and VHF (Very High Frequency) are two different frequency bands for commercial radios. Both formats are effective ways to communicate with another person, however in most applications UHF is a better choice.

UHF has a shorter wavelength which makes it easier for the signal to find its way through rugged terrain or the inside of a building. The longer wavelength of VHF means it can transmit further under ideal conditions, such as outdoor locations with clear line of sight. One exception to using a VHF radio outdoors is if it is used it in a heavily wooded or rugged area. Under these conditions a UHF radio may be able to transmit better though the terrain.

If the radios are used mainly inside buildings, then UHF is likely the best solution since its shorter wavelength travels through the building better. There are more available channels with UHF so in more populated areas UHF may be less likely to have interference from other systems.

2) What is the difference between the radios you sell?

Currently we offer three different radio models (available in either UHF/VHF). All radios come with a rechargeable battery pack, single station battery charger, belt clip and antenna.

The UA500/UA501 radios are value-priced at $69.99 and include most of the features found in our expensive radios. These radios feature standard Ni-MH batteries instead of the lighter Li-ion batteries found in our other radios.

The UA300/UA301 radios are priced at $79.99 and are much smaller and compact in size than our other radios (approx 40% smaller). These radios feature lighter Li-ion batteries and a Li-ion charging station.

The UA400/UA401 radios are priced at $99.99 and include lighter Li-ion batteries and Li-ion charging station. Some customers prefer the sleeker look. These radios are approximately the same size as the UA500/UA501.

3) Which is better, Ni-MH or Li-ion batteries?

Li-ion batteries are much lighter and are rated for more charge cycles than Ni-MH batteries. Both batteries have the same rated capacity, so they will give the same runtime on a radio. In most applications, Li-ion batteries will wear more slowly and hold its charge better over the lifetime of the battery.
